Don’t Wait Until the Last Hour: Every Tourism Business Needs Its Own Digital Identity

When the Titanic struck the iceberg in 1912, many people still believed they were on one of the safest ships ever built.

The danger did not immediately feel real.

The ship was huge.

The lights were still on.

People were still talking.

Some passengers could not imagine that something so powerful could actually go down.

Then the situation changed.

Very quickly.

And by the time everybody understood the seriousness of the situation, time had become the most valuable thing they no longer had.

I believe the tourism industry should learn something from this.

We Have Seen This Movie Before

When Online Travel Agents — OTAs — first entered the tourism industry, many traditional tourism players did not take them seriously.

Travel agents had offices.

Tour operators had buses.

Hotels had rooms.

Attractions had ticket counters.

They already had customers.

Why change?

Then OTAs became bigger.

Travellers started searching online.

They compared prices online.

They read reviews online.

They booked online.

Slowly, the companies controlling the customer journey were no longer necessarily the companies owning the tourism product.

The digital platforms were becoming the new front door.

Today, another iceberg is appearing.

Its name is Artificial Intelligence.

And once again, many tourism businesses are watching instead of acting.

AI Is Changing How Travellers Discover Tourism

The next traveller may not begin by visiting your website.

They may ask:

“Where should I stay in Langkawi?”

“What authentic food experience can I join in Kuala Lumpur?”

“Recommend a family-friendly tour in Malaysia.”

“What can I do in Kuala Perlis for one day?”

“Which local tour operator can arrange this for me?”

Increasingly, AI systems are becoming part of the discovery process.

That changes everything.

Because the question is no longer simply:

“Am I on Google?”

The new questions are:

Can AI find my business?

Can AI understand what I sell?

Can AI recommend me when somebody asks?

And finally:

Can the traveller book me immediately?

If the answer is no, your business may exist physically…

but digitally, you may almost be invisible.

Your Facebook Page Is Not Your Digital Identity

This is where many tourism players misunderstand digitalisation.

They say:

“I already have Facebook.”

“I have Instagram.”

“I have TikTok.”

“I am listed on an OTA.”

Good.

But you are still operating on somebody else’s land.

Facebook owns Facebook.

TikTok owns TikTok.

The OTA owns its marketplace.

They can change their algorithm.

They can change their commission.

They can change their rules.

They can reduce your reach.

They can suspend your account.

Your own digital identity should be something that you control.

Think of it like your digital passport.

When people — or AI — want to understand your business, there should be a clear place where they can identify:

Who you are.

Where you operate.

What experiences you offer.

Who the experience is for.

How much it costs.

What is included.

When it is available.

What makes it different.

How travellers can contact you.

And most importantly:

How travellers can book.

Every Tourism Business Needs a Digital Home

A homestay needs one.

A tour guide needs one.

A restaurant needs one.

A local experience host needs one.

A transport operator needs one.

A travel agency needs one.

Even a small village experience needs one.

You do not need a complicated website with 100 pages.

Start small.

One clear digital identity is better than ten social-media accounts that do not explain what you actually sell.

Your digital home should contain your business name, location, contact information, products, experiences, photos, description, pricing or enquiry process, reviews or credibility signals, and a clear booking action.

Then connect that identity with the wider digital ecosystem.

Google.

Maps.

Social media.

Travel marketplaces.

Review platforms.

Destination websites.

Media articles.

Directories.

And increasingly, AI discovery.

OTAs Are Not the Enemy

I am not suggesting tourism players should leave OTAs.

That would be another mistake.

OTAs can give you distribution.

They can bring customers.

They can create trust.

They can expose your product to international markets.

Use them.

But do not allow an OTA to become your entire digital identity.

There is a big difference between:

using a marketplace

and

depending completely on a marketplace.

Build your own identity while using other platforms for distribution.

Your website is your home.

OTAs are your distribution partners.

Social media is your communication channel.

AI is becoming another discovery channel.

You need all of them working together.

The Biggest Risk Is Waiting

This is the lesson from the Titanic metaphor.

The biggest danger is not always the iceberg

.

Sometimes the bigger danger is believing:

“We still have time.”

“We can do it later.”

“My business is okay.”

“My customers already know me.”

“AI will not affect my business.”

That mindset is dangerous.

Digital change normally looks slow…

until suddenly it looks very fast.

We saw it with OTAs.

We saw it with social media.

We saw it with mobile booking.

Now we are seeing it with AI.

Do not wait until everybody is rushing for the lifeboats.

Start building now.

Start With Three Questions

Every tourism player should sit down today and ask:

1. Can AI find me?

Does the internet contain enough clear, consistent and credible information about my business?

2. Will AI recommend me?

Have I created enough authority, relevance, reviews, content and digital signals for my business to be considered when travellers are searching?

3. Can travellers book me immediately?

Once somebody discovers my business, is there a simple path from interest to enquiry, reservation or payment?

If you cannot confidently answer all three, there is work to do.

And that is okay.

The important thing is to start.

The Future Will Reward Businesses That Are Easy to Understand

AI cannot recommend what it cannot understand.

Travellers cannot book what they cannot find.

And businesses cannot build long-term digital value if their entire identity lives inside somebody else’s platform.

This is why I believe every tourism player should begin building their own Digital Identification.

Not next year.

Not when AI becomes bigger.

Not when your competitors start doing it.

Now.

Because the future of tourism will not only belong to the companies with the biggest hotels, the most buses or the largest offices.

It will increasingly belong to businesses that are:

Visible.

Understandable

Credible.

Bookable.

And ready to be discovered in an AI-driven world.

The Titanic did not become dangerous only when people started panicking.

The danger existed before the panic.

The same principle applies to digital disruption.

Do not wait for the last hour.

Build your digital identity while you still have time to build it properly.
