Why Local Cooking Experiences Could Be Malaysia’s Next Tourism Opportunity

And Why I Believe More Malaysian Tourism Players Should Promote Local Cooking Experience.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been researching one question:

What makes a local food experience memorable enough for tourists to recommend it, return for it, and even choose a destination because of it?

The answer wasn’t based on opinions.

It came from academic research.

A study published in the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management found that memorable local food experiences have a significant influence on tourists’ attitudes, well-being, intention to recommend, and loyalty to a destination.

In other words, great local food experiences don’t just satisfy visitors—they create emotional connections that encourage positive word of mouth and repeat engagement.

Think about that for a moment.

Tourists don’t remember every hotel room.

They don’t remember every airport.

But they often remember the family that welcomed them into their home, the grandmother who taught them to cook, and the meal they shared around the table.

That is the power of a memorable local experience.

Malaysia Has the Ingredients

We have:

  • Thousands of traditional family recipes.

  • Homemakers and retired teachers with incredible cooking skills.

  • Rich cultural diversity.

  • Warm hospitality that visitors consistently praise.

Yet many of these treasures remain inside our homes.

What if we could transform them into bookable tourism experiences?

Not restaurants.

Not cafés.

Experiences.

Imagine a visitor spending three hours in a Malaysian home, learning to cook a family recipe, hearing stories, sharing a meal, and leaving with memories they will tell their friends about.

That experience cannot be replicated by AI.

It cannot be downloaded.

It has to be lived.

A Small Pilot with a Bigger Vision

That is exactly why Your Inbound Matters is launching a pilot project called:

Taste of Malaysia – Cook, Learn & Experience with Rafidah

Rafidah is a retired teacher based in Cyberjaya who will share her authentic Kuey Teow Pulau family recipe from Penang.

This isn’t just about learning to cook.

It’s about testing whether a genuine Malaysian home hospitality experience can become a globally marketable tourism product.

If it works, why stop at one?

Imagine:

  • A Nyonya cooking experience in Melaka.

  • A traditional Kelantan family kitchen.

  • A Sabah village cooking experience.

  • An Orang Asli forest food experience.

  • A Sarawak longhouse culinary experience.

Each one becomes another reason for travellers to choose Malaysia.

This Is Why I’m Inviting You

On 6 August, we’re organising a small pilot session.

I’m inviting travel agents, tour operators, guides, and tourism entrepreneurs to experience it firsthand.

I don’t want you to come only to taste the food.

I want you to evaluate it as a tourism product.

Ask yourself:

  • Would international tourists pay for this?

  • How would you package it?

  • How would you market it?

  • What would make it even more memorable?

Your feedback will help shape the experience before we introduce it to international travellers.

My Hope

I hope this is more than a successful FAM trip.

I hope it’s the beginning of a movement.

A movement where Malaysian homemakers, retirees, local communities, and tourism businesses work together to create authentic experiences that benefit everyone.

Because I believe the future of tourism isn’t just about bringing more visitors to Malaysia.

It’s about helping visitors experience the real Malaysia.
